Skrei is a Norwegian cod stock fished between January and April. Every year, this cod migrates from Barents Sea to the clear, cold waters of the Lofoten Islands off the Norwegian coast. After this long journey, skrei cod arrives in the optimum condition in terms of size, flavour and texture, offering the opportunity to eat truly exceptional fish.
What makes skrei so special?
The Norwegians are proud of skrei because it is a unique cod - exquisite and exclusive to the Norwegian coast. The fishing of it is a celebrated phenomenon and a hotly anticipated event in Norway. A celebration of skrei takes place annually during the fishing season.
In order to be classified as SKREI, the cod must be fished when it is fully matured, at least 5 years of age. Its skin must be flawless and display no damage whatsoever, it must be packaged in less than 12 hours from capture, and it must be conserved in ice at a temperature of between 0 and 4 degrees. Only the best skrei bears the SKREI stamp in order to guarantee the quality standard and sustainable fishing. This stamp is found on the dorsal fin and on the packaging.
